1. Fantastic transport links
The average train journey to London from Colchester is around 61-minutes, depending on which train you catch. If you get the fast train with the least stops you can expect to arrive at Liverpool Street in just 47-minutes.
Colchester is located on the A12 with easy links to London and the South via the M25 and the Midlands and North via the A14. It is also less than a 50-minute drive from Stansted Airport, where you can fly to 130 destinations across Europe.
2. Rich history
Colchester is well known for being the capital of Roman Britain and has many important Roman sites and ruins scattered across the town, even its famous medieval castle is built upon the foundations of a Roman temple.
There is plenty to discover from other eras too, such as the picturesque 16th Century Dutch Quarter, with its timber framed buildings and cobbled streets, famously where Twinkle Twinkle Little Star was written.
3. New development
With new housing developments courtesy of reputable house builders such as Bellway Homes and Taylor Wimpey popping up around the town, it’s no surprise that young professionals are flocking to Colchester.
The average price of a property in Colchester according to Zoopla is £300,721 (November 2019), considerably lower than London, but still with fantastic commuter credentials and local amenities.
4. Amazing attractions
Whether you’re a young professional, family or empty nester, Colchester has plenty of attractions to keep you entertained.
Colchester Zoo is rated as the 2nd best zoo in the country and 11th best in the world. It is home to many endangered species and stages a variety of activities for all ages.
There is also no shortage of culture in Colchester, with an incredible array of galleries, theatres, art centres and cinemas.
5. Shopping
Unlike many town centres in 2019, Colchester is thriving, with a mix of big-name high street shops and specialist privately owned stores.
The historic lanes of Colchester provide a chocolate box of small, unique, independent stores, or head to the high street, which is home to two department stores - Debenhams and Fenwick.
Colchester also plays host to a street market every Friday and Saturday, and there are additional vintage, craft and farmers markets held throughout the year.
