1. First impressions count
If the exterior of your property is looking a little unloved then it’s time to don your gardening gloves! Clear the drive of any weeds, trim any shrubs and add some colour with a few bedding plants. Touch up any paintwork and ensure your front door looks welcoming.
2. Clear away clutter
Take a leaf out of Marie Kondo’s book and get rid of all your unloved and unused junk. Ask yourself do I need it? Does it give me joy? Not only will it make your home more appealing to potential buyers, but it will also make moving day much less painful.
3. Let there be light
Ensure all blinds and curtains are open to let in as much natural light in as possible. A bright, airy room looks bigger and is more inviting.
4. Keep it Simple
Give any brightly coloured walls a lick of paint in neutral tones and hide away any furnishings that may deter people with different tastes. You may love your vintage zebra print rug, but potential buyers may not.
5. Remove personal items
Buyers want to imagine themselves living in your home, so be sure to put away personal items such as kids artwork or family photos.
6. Store it
Consider renting a storage unit to store any bulky items of furniture. Not only does less furniture make the room appear larger, but by removing any obstructions you improve the flow around the property.
7. Be conscious of smells
Don’t cook any strong smelling dishes the day of a viewing! Whilst curry, fish and bacon may taste delicious, their smells linger.
8. Give each room a purpose
The spare room that you’ve been using as a guest bedroom/office/dumping ground will confuse your potential buyers. Pick a use and roll with it, clearly staging the room to showcase that particular purchase.
9. Bring the outdoors in
A vase of flowers is perfect for drawing the eye in on a particular feature such as a fireplace. It also brightens up a neutral room and adds a subtle scent.
10. Spring clean
The most important tip of all - clean, clean, clean! Be sure to pay extra attention to those little nooks that you may overlook during your weekly chores. Clean skirting boards, polish door handles, dust lampshades and give all light switches a good wipe.
